About me
My name is Angelina Davydova.
I am an Amsterdam-based abstract and figurative artist guided by a strong sense of internal creativity. My self-taught practice emerged through escapism, as I created early works by evading daily routine, which has developed into a spontaneous style. Often starting with a scratch on handmade paper and giving my tools freedom, my digital and oil paintings predominantly lean into intuition. Themes and subjects emerge organically as I respond to the emotional atmosphere of my surroundings, led by rhythms within music and even silence. My oeuvre draws from the iconic David Hockney’s abstraction techniques, colours, and freedom of expression. I also ground my approach to art inspired by the serenity encountered within Christian Orthodox iconography. With a distinct mindset, my emerging practice undermines conventional rules and methodologies in honour of self-determination and creative freedom over the zeitgeist. My work will evolve from these foundations by taking its first step into the public eye later this year, with upcoming shows in London, New York, and Tokyo.

Review by Anthony Fawcett
Angelina Davydova is an Amsterdam-based painter, self-taught, who now has an international following for her lyrical abstract work. Her oeuvre has taken influences from painters such as David Hockney, and her deep faith in Christian Orthodox iconography, resulting in a unique and personal body of work.
Davydova's paintings remind me of the earliest cave paintings from Lascaux in France, primitive in the sense of their urgency and spontaneity. With a lush, warm palette, her abstract patterns are always overlaid with floating man-like figures who seem to jump out of the canvas. Perhaps a figure from her subconscious, or dreams?
As the American abstract/figurative painter Alex Katz so eloquently wrote, "It's the instantaneous light. If you get it right, then you get it in the total present tense. That's what you're going for, that's eternity..." ("Give Me
Tomorrow," 2012). Davydova's paintings sing with an almost musical intensity; her colors melding with her intense vision, which is almost operatic. Her hypnotic overlays are reminiscent of Chinese calligraphy, hieroglyphs from a
distant past. There are echoes of Indian tantric art as well. As Angelina Davydova prepares for shows in New York, London, and Tokyo, I believe she is a true rising star whose path I look forward to following.
